“I feel like my world view has changed for the better. I developed a strong connection with nature, learned a lot about the park’s flora and fauna, and made myself physically stronger!” - A Legacy Fund volunteer

The Torres del Paine Legacy Fund is a nonprofit initiative dedicated to the preservation, support, and celebration of Torres del Paine National Park and its surrounding communities. With support from visitors, the public sector, and responsible businesses, we raise awareness and mobilize resources to reinvest in local sustainability projects that contribute to the long term health of this fragile destination.

Thanks to a working agreement signed with CONAF in 2017, Legacy Fund constantly supports a diverse project portfolio inside of Torres del Paine National Park and other protected areas in Magallanes. Each year, we lead groups of volunteers - who we invite from all over Chile - to be a part of our work and spend ten days working on park conservation & infrastructure projects with us.

If you are interested in volunteering with the Legacy Fund, please fill out the form below. Please keep in mind, priority & preference is given to volunteers that live in Chile (and specially Magallanes). If you would like to volunteer for the Legacy Fund in a capacity outside of fieldwork, please highlight that below as well.

2023-2024 Projects

Volunteer projects consist of brief stays in Torres del Paine National Park for 10 days contributing to maintenance and construction on the ‘Base of Towers’ trail, near Chileno campground to the Torres campground and from the Torres campground to the moraine:

  • First group: between November 27th – December 6th, 2023.

  • Second group: between December 8th - 17th, 2023.

  • Third group (potencially): in march 2024. Dates not yet defined (but it will be during the first fortnight of the month)

The ‘Base of Towers’ trail is the most visiting trail at the park, and also is habitat for the Huemul (Hippocamelus bisulcus), an endangered deer from Patagonia that you could have lucky enough to find at the park.

Volunteer Conditions

It is very important to consider that volunteer conditions will be determined by the extreme climate of the Magallanes region, which may consist of days of heavy rain, significant sun, or intense wind.

This volunteering requires:

  • Volunteer must be in very good physical shape, especially considering that the Base of Towers Campsite is about three hours walking on a steep slope with heavy tools, tent, and camping bag.

  • That the volunteer is conscious about the difficulties with camping in the mountain (no electricity, nor internet, hot water and showers are a walking a big distance away)

  • Volunteer must be comfortable without certain luxuries and commodities in the camping area.

  • All volunteers must have or be willing to acquire (via rental or purchase), a backpacking tent, sleeping bag, backpack (at least 60L), and sleeping mat.

  • The Torres del Paine Legacy Fund will cover all costs associated with:

    • Local Transportation between Puerto Natales & Torres del Paine National Park

    • Campsite costs, National Park entrance fees, and all food while in Torres del Paine National Park.

Requirements

  • Volunteers must be in good physical health to carry-out conservation and development activities in a remote, open-air environment.

  • Volunteers must be willing and enthusiastic about carrying-out tasks that can be physically strenuous, in variable weather.

  • Personal accident and/or health insurance. Your insurance must have the following coverage: Accidental death, accidental dismemberment, and reimbursement of expenses for medical accidents.

  • If you are not Chilean, you must speak an intermediate-advanced level of spanish.

  • Availability in the exact dates listed. If you are not from Magallanes, consider that you will need to reserve your plane tickets with anticipation.

  • Capacity to work as a part of a team.

  • Comfort working in rough terrain.

  • *Preference will be given to volunteers from the Magallanes region.

  • If you are interested in volunteering with Legacy Fund, please fill out the form below- If you are selected, we will contact you by email and ask to complete some documents and send your health insurance and travelling dates. We will need your confirmation for your participation by email in the next week. We asked you to be very careful and responsible to your emails and to respond it. Consider that maybe our response could reach to your spam folder.
